I didn't know a lick about insurance and generally disliked insurance altogether, but the thought of being a business owner was too tempting. I accepted Dean's challenge and got licensed in 10 days.

Basically all of my family and friends thought I was crazy giving up a cushy, almost 6 figure a year income to start an insurance office with absolutely zero clients. But I was young and adventurous, ready to take on the world.

After going through several months of training, I was ready to open up my office. My first month was a total nightmare! I had no idea what I was doing! I spent most of the time freaking out because I wasn't selling anything.

I learned really fast how a business is nothing without marketing. During my training I was taught that an insurance agency marketing plan consisted of the following:

  1. Send 200-300 company approved letters each month and follow up with a phone call.

  3. Make 500 X-Date calls every single day, then call 'em back to do a quote 30 days before renewal.

Since I had no client base and basically no money, I built my agency on cold calling. I spent the first 2 1/2 years pounding the phones everyday, 6 days a week until I went from 0 to 300 households.

I’d try to implement one technique after another. I could get a strategy up and going for a little while and get some results off of it, but I could never keep it going because I'd get pulled away by all the things agents have to do - go to meetings, training team members, meeting with clients, etc.

There were other strategies that I wanted to do but just could not figure out how to make it work for me. On top of that, I could never consistently run anything I tried to do, which led to poor results. This went on in my office for 3 years.
